The place was never the point. The people were.

We have never believed in the kind of luxury made of marble and gold. Ours is simpler and harder to find. Sunshine and salt water. A long table and the right faces around it. Great food, good wine, perhaps a little too much of it. The feeling, at some point in the night, that you would not want to be anywhere else on earth.

It cannot be staged and it cannot be sold. It only happens when the room is right. So we spend our care on the room. A dinner in the city. A house in the hills where no one asks the time. A morning that begins at noon. The last swim of the summer, taken at midnight because no one wanted the day to end. The empty chairs at four o’clock, the glasses still full, the conversation still going.

Everything is considered. None of it is meant to show. That is the whole art of it.

We choose our guests by one thing, the spark a person carries into a room. The rest takes care of itself.
